Exhausts and mufflers are unsung car parts that serve important and interesting functions in a vehicle. What functions? We asked our Saranac Lake, NY Upstate Auto Service & Body Works Incorporated service techs this very question. Here's what they told us.
The exhaust system in a vehicle includes the muffler. The exhaust's main job is to keep cabin air breathable and to expel relatively harmless gases into the atmosphere. After capturing gases from cylinders inside the engine combustion chamber, the exhaust system's catalytic converter turns poisonous fumes into water vapor and C02, both subsequently expelled via the tailpipe.
What a Muffler DoesBefore converted gases exit via the tailpipe, they pass through a series of tubes and holes inside the muffler. These gases and engine soundwaves undergo acoustical dampening. This greatly diminishes, or muffles, the roar and rumble that most engines make as they combust. In short, exhaust and mufflers keep your ride safe, efficient, and reasonably quiet to both passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians.
